Maybe I'm an Ageist

I’m still trying to assess how I felt about Spring Awakening.  I suspect I would have really liked it when I was in High School.  Overall, it was okay but didn’t really appeal to me.  Although it was kind of different, I also felt it was a rehash of alot of themes we’ve seen before.

Pros:

1) Gerard Cononico - he was really good.  Lots of energy and he created a moving character.

2) Choreography - Bill T. Jones made the most of the rather small stage.

3) There was a diversity of body types amongst the actors.  Not all the girls were waiflike.

4) Emma Hunton sang very well and her duet with Cononico was a highlight.

5) It’s not a bad thing to have a Broadway show that details the negative consequences of repression and lack of education.  Particularly in this political environment.

Cons:

1) Hunter Parrish acted well but I didn’t think his singing was good enough for the lead in a major broadway show.  Having said that, I was excited to see “the cute son from Weeds” so I understand that they need to fill the seats.

2) Here’s the ageist part:  I was creeped out that a number of the performers seemed ridiculously young.  I didn’t need that much realism.

3) Some parts had an obvious appeal to the teen crowd but for me, not so much.  For example, there’s a song called “Totally F**ked” and all it did for me was remind me of a great moment in  “Weeds”.  Mary Louise Parker’s character has just discovered that the entire batch of stolen pot that she had to return to a violent drug lord has been dumped into a swimming pool by her neighbor.  As she stares at the floating stash and realizes the full horror of this development, the soundtrack loudly blasts the Ween song “You F**ked Up” - and it’s the perfect sentiment.   That’s all I could think of during the Spring Awakening song.

So all in all, I don’t think it’s a bad show.  I’m glad I saw it even though it didn’t really speak to me the way it seemed to affect others.

The Bonnie Hunt Show — “Mama Babies” (via bonniehuntshow)

Bonnie Hunt’s daytime talk show starts on September 8th.  Yes, she’s had a couple of failed sitcoms (most notably, The Bonnie Hunt Show) but she’s funny.  A talk show may be just the right way to show off her quirky kind of humor. This clip makes me laugh out loud - it’s so dumb to laugh at this, I know but it just cracks me up.  I don’t know why.

Celebrity Sighting

Just saw Chris Noth walking by Astor Place in NYC. Dressed casually in dark t-shirt, looking like he might have come from the gym. Nothing remarkable to report - I just love seeing famous people on the street - not for any reason other than I think it’s fun. So I felt the need to go back into the Starbucks I had just left and post this. You likely may not think it was quite that urgent.

Why oh why did I start watching Nashville Star?

It’s got to be that I miss American Idol and was looking for any substitute no matter how misguided.  Really.  That’s got to be it.  It can’t be that I think they’re going to find someone who is going to become a huge country star.  I just don’t think that group of singers has it in them.  Miranda Lambert did come out of Nashville Star (although she was a runner-up not the winner) and she’s quite good, but I think that may prove to be the exception rather than the rule.  So far they don’t have a super track record.

What I can recommend is instead of actually watching Nashville Star (which concludes tonight), you read the hilarious recaps written at www.televisionwithoutpity.com.  Much more entertaining.  For example, they comment on “Jewel, who has a new haircut that makes her look simultaneously like Shirley Temple and Betty White”.   Nice.

The Duke Spirit - Lassoo (via thedukespiritvideos)

Went to The Saint in Neptune, NJ to see The Duke Spirit performing from their new CD, “Neptune”.   They are currently touring the U.S. and they put on a great live show.  Check them out.  They’ve got a psychedelic meets grunge kind of sound.  Elements of Grace Slick, Patti Smith but not a copycat, original in the way that Jack White uses influences from the past but makes a whole new sound.  Some standout tracks - Lassoo, The Step And The Walk and You Really Wake Up The Love In Me.
